Lannleire GFC - Sixty years

Supporters and members of Lannleire GFC will be aware that the present club is now sixty years in existence. Having re-formed in early 1952 - Lannleire had competed from 1940-1943 - the club played its very first Co.Board fixture that year in the Rannafast Cup on 09-03-1952 when they defeated St.Fechins by 5-06 to 1-03. Although no trophies were won that year,it was, however, the start of a fruitful period which saw Lannleire lift the Rannafast Cup in 1953 before John Bowden captained the side to victory in 2nd Division Championship of 1955.

Division 3 League Lannleire 1-18 John Mitchels 0-06

Lannleire picked up two badly needed points at Pairc Ui Mhuiri on Sunday when defeating a disappointing John Mitchels side by 1-18 to 0-06.Lannleire management will be pleased with the home side's display however, which saw them register all but five of their scores from play. From the outset Lannleire were dominant and when corner forward Paul Callan goaled after only eleven minutes the John Mitchels already looked a beaten side.Although playing against the breeze, Lannleire's Carlos Lambe knocked over some fine scores from play and frees and when the half time whistle sounded Lannleire led 1-08 to 0-04. John Mitchels scored the opening two points of the second period but that was to conclude their scoring for the afternoon.Lannleire's forwards proceeded to score at will adding ten points to their first half total. All five subs got a second half run out for Lannleire with John Farrelly coming off the bench and kicking two fine points from play. Referee Tony Dolan Lannleire team and scorers: Gerard Matthews; Bob Murphy, Peter Neacy, Paul Kearney; Donal Clare, Andrew Flanagan, Brendan McEvoy; Robert O' Rourke, Ian Mulroy 0-01; Mark Dunne 0-02, Carlos Lambe 0-04 (3f), Gary Monaghan 0-02; Alan Murphy 0-02 (1f), Paul Callan 1-04 (1f), Niall Lennon 0-01. Subs: Richard Kieran for Paul Kearney; Paul Doyle for Carlos Lambe; John Farrelly 0-02 for Alan Murphy; Patrick O'Connor for Niall Lennon; David Donovan for Paul Callan. P.S. A minute's silence was observed in memory of John Kelly Grangebellew, uncle of Lannleire treasurer Bernard Dunne and former chairman Kenneth Dunne.
